Summer entertaining is back in full force, and your residents will be enjoying many fun activities, pool side parties, gardening, vacations, and more. But is your property prepared for the severe weather of summer? Preparation is important to keep your property functioning, and your residents safe. What is the saying, prepare for the worst but hope for the best? We hope your summer is serene, but in the case it is not, you can rest easy knowing you’ve done all you can to prepare, using our electrical best practices checklist:

Back-up Power Sources

Storms strike at any time, with no warning. But the aftermath can last for a long time. Especially if you are without power. Does your property utilize a back-up power source? Make sure your Generator is ready, and if you do not currently have back up power source, now is the time to look into it.

Surge Protection

Protecting your electronics and appliances are easy when storms strike with surge protection. Whether localized to each unit, or in your whole property, surge protection is a fast and efficient installation to any property. Don’t gamble with yours and your tenants’ valuables. Surge Protection can be customized, and uniquely planned for your property.

Fallen Power Lines

If you have lines down on your property, make sure to call your utility company ASAP. No one is to go anywhere near the area. If there are spark or a fire, call the fire company or 911.

Wet Electrical Circuits

If your circuitry is compromised, and possibly wet, turn off the power at the breaker. However, never touch the breaker or fuse if you are in water. Wait to turn power back on to the circuitry until it has been inspected by an electrician.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Using Generators sometimes means Carbon Monoxide risks. Carbon Monoxide detectors are mandatory at all properties, make sure yours are operating effectively and you are complaint to codes.

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans can help in extreme heat of summer, and help in preventing really high AC Costs. Installing all types of fans, ceiling fans, bathroom fans, exhaust fans all help to regulate temperatures and keep units cool. Moving air can make your residence feel 8-10 degrees cooler.

Safe Swimming

Always have an electrician inspect your power sources, hot tubs, or lighting around your pool areas to make sure all are operating properly, to avoid shock or electrocution. Keep any power cords at least 5 feet away from the pool or hot tub. Always use GFCI outlets around your pool area.

Trees Trimmed

Always keep your trees trimmed on and around your property. Extreme winds and rain can have limbs falling on cars, power lines, and your buildings. Regular trimming is easy and crucial to preventing damage.

Grounded Outlets

In the case of storms and electrical surges, make sure all your major appliances are plugged into grounded outlets, and these outlets are functioning properly. Unplug When On Vacation — If your tenants are going on an extended vacation, encourage them to unplug electronics and large appliances (not the refrigerator). This saves energy use for your facility and $ off utility bills.
