Winter weather is right around the corner, and preparations are important prior to those freezing temperatures falling! Burst pipes and electrical fires are all results of extreme condition, and can be prevented.
Reference our list of winter preparations to check off prior to extreme weather this winter:
- Taking down Holiday Decorations
Never leave lights on dried Christmas trees indoors, as this poses a fire risk. Also it is safer to take down outdoor décor prior to the first ice storm hitting. Ice can damage décor, and also can make taking down lights dangerous. Don’t delay!
- Space Heater Precautions
Space heaters are one of the leading causes of fire in the US. Make sure your tenants are aware of best safety practices when using a space heater. Never plug them into an extension cord, make sure they are at least 3 feet away from anything combustible, and never leave them unattended.
- Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Smoke Detectors
Need to be present and to current code requirements. An electrical inspection by a licensed electrician will ensure your detectors are current and working properly.
- Heating Systems
Regular maintenance on your HVAC Systems will help ensure comfort, and that your pipes will not freeze. Walls left uninsulated are most at risk to burst. Consider installing baseboard heating in areas of less heat or insulation.
In terraces and balconies should be clear of all fall foliage so water does not collect and freeze.
Make sure your generators are serviced prior to winter so they are operating effectively when needed. The worst way to find out your back-up generator is not working is when you need it most.
- Emergency Weather Plan
Salt, shovels, snow blowers, and a snow removal plan are all a necessity when inclement weather strikes. Make sure yours is current, and supplies are readily available.
- Panel Inspections
Tenants tend to use more electricity in the winter months. Space heaters, lighting, are used more than ever. If your circuits are tripping, or you are concerned you possibly need more power, consider a panel inspection to make sure your building is safe and appropriately powered.
