Recently Walter Electric has been busy replacing defective Electrical Panels in area Maryland Properties. Some of these panels, known as Federal Pacific Stab Lok Panels, were very popular in the 1950’s to the 1980’s, however, pose an electrical hazard due to their inability to consistently trip when sensing an overload.

Why is this important?

If a breaker does not trip when needed, fires and property damage occur. If it is faulty, or not operating effectively, you are putting your residents at risk. The panel is the heart of our property’s electrical.

Stay safe, use our list of warning signs your panel might need inspected:

  • Replace Defective or Recalled Panels. Many properties built between 1950 and 1980 could have defective panels on recall lists. Like a ticking time bomb, these electrical panels need to be replaced due to recalls: Stab Lok Electrical Panel, Zinsco or GTE Sylvania Panels are just a few. Getting an inspection can help keep you and your property safe.
  • Panel is warm to touch or gives off a burning smell. This is a sign never to overlook, and spells danger.
  • Breakers trip often. This can be a symptom of many electrical issues, but, one which should be inspected.
You’ve upgraded your appliances. If you property has recently gone through a renovation or upgrade, the time might be soon to upgrade your panels. Your property units’ wiring and panel are built to handle a certain amount of amperage. If your panel and wiring cannot support the increase, then your panel needs an upgrade.
  • Flickering Lights. When a dishwasher goes on, or a hair dryer, are your lights flickering? This is a sign that your wiring, or electrical could be at risk.
  • Any strange sounds. If you panel is making a hissing sound, it needs to be inspected.
  • Rust or corrosion. Any type of rust or evidence of corrosion is another suspicious sign. Play it safe and get the panel inspected.
