1. Smoke Detectors
It goes without saying smoke detectors save lives, especially at night when your family is most vulnerable. Make sure your smoke detectors are up to date and operating effectively. Do you have one on every floor and outside every bedroom? Are you testing batteries monthly?
2. Carbon Monoxide Detectors
If you use natural gas in our around your home, you are at risk for Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Detectors are important, especially at night, when your family is asleep.
3. Surge Protectors
Surge protection can save our electronics, and protect us from fire risk if a powerful storm is near. They regulate the amount of voltage moving through home by diverting excess electricity to a grounding wire.
4. AFCI’s (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters)
AFCI’s (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters) are circuit breakers that turn off electricity at the source if it detects a dangerous condition (overheating, etc).
5. GFCI’s (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters)
Install GFCI’s (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) in bathrooms, kitchens and outdoors to prevent electric shock—anywhere an outlet may come in contact with moisture.
6. Tamper Resistant Receptacles
A tamper resistant receptacle has “shutters” that close the openings when not in use. This can drastically eliminate the risk of a child getting shocked if they try to put something or even their fingers in the contact openings.
