1. Deck the halls but make sure electrical decorations do not have frayed or pinched wires that could cause a fire.
  2. Hide your gifts but not your extension cords. Never string extension cords together or run them under carpet or furniture. Only use extension cords outdoors that are marked as such.
  3. As days turn colder, we are looking for ways to stay warm—but never leave your space heater running while you are asleep. Turn it off when you are out of the room as well.
  4. Tis the season for holiday guests. Make sure all smoke detectors are working properly.
  5. Cooking or heating with gas? Carbon Monoxide detectors are a must and the law.
  6. If you tend to decorate like Clark Griswold, make sure your holiday display doesn’t overload the electrical circuits. If a circuit keeps tripping, you may need a heavy up or move some décor.
  7. Exterior lights are a holiday staple but never staple or nail them in place. Use clips or other approved forms to keep lights in place.
  8. Take down your holiday lights at the end of the season. The lights are not made to withstand the elements all year long.
  9. A cup full of cheer goes for your tree too. Keep your Christmas tree well watered and use non-combustible or flame-resistant materials and lights to decorate it.
  10. Convert to LED lights this year. LED holiday lights don’t generate heat like regular light bulbs. Plus they are not made out of gas so they are more durable.
