When it comes to electric, being green means saving money. We all want to do that right? And conserving energy is important too. Here are five simple ways you can save your green by being green.

  1. Use minimum wattage and/or LED light bulbs. We all want a brighter home or living space and as fall approaches our daylight hours are waning. We turn on more lights. However, we will see less of a spike in our utilities this time of year if we install LED bulbs which are more energy efficient than traditional light bulbs.
  2. Unplug appliances not in use. Computers, TV’s, DVD Players, and Stereos can easily be put on a power strip so you can turn them off and on at once with the flip of a switch. These electronics, while not in use, still draw electrical power, and you are being charged even if you aren’t using them.
  3. Put outdoor lights on timers. If you want your outdoor space to be bright for the evening hours, but minimal for overnight, set your outdoor lights to operate on timers so they can go off while you are asleep.
  4. Visit BGE Smart Energy Savers website. They are always offering rebates for energy efficient appliances, and rewards for recycling old appliances. Older appliances and electronics require more energy in most cases. Replacing them with more recent technology can actually save you money in electricity costs.
  5. Ceiling fans can help keep your house WARMER in the winter, and cooler in summer. As we are headed towards winter, a ceiling fan can actually circulate the warm air that has risen towards the ceiling, and circulate it back down to the living spaces in your home. This will make your living space feel warmer, and you save in energy costs.
