October 9th-15th is acknowledged as National Fire Prevention Week by the NFPA, National Fire Prevention Association.  Did you know your home’s wiring and electrical is one of the top fire risks in the home?  Learn how to keep your family safe with these 5 simple tips for home fire prevention and safety.

  1. Install AFCI’s (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters), which are circuit breakers that turn off electricity at the source if it detects a dangerous condition (overheating, etc).
  2. Install GFCI’s (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) in bathrooms, kitchens and outdoors to prevent electric shock—anywhere an outlet may come in contact with moisture.
  3. Install tamper resistant receptacles.  A tamper resistant receptacle has “shutters” that close the openings when not in use.  This can drastically eliminate the risk of a child getting shocked if they try to put something or even their fingers in the contact openings.
  4. Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors, and smoke detectors.  Carbon Monoxide detectors are required by law in Maryland for all new home construction. They detect levels of gas at levels unsafe for human health, and save lives.
  5. Do not run extension cords for long periods of time inside or outside your home. These cords can wear and potentially become a fire risk.  Instead, install another outlet if you need more convenient access to electricity.
